Giving Back: How to Support Local Atlanta Charities and Families This Thanksgiving

David Pruett  |  November 19, 2025

Thanksgiving has a way of bringing out the best in us. It’s a season that naturally inspires reflection, gratitude, and the desire to share what we have with others. As we gather around the table with family and friends, it’s important to remember that many of our neighbors are facing challenges that can make this time of year more stressful than celebratory. One of the things I’ve always appreciated about Atlanta is the heart this city shows when community members come together to lift one another up — and the holidays are a beautiful opportunity to do just that.

If you’re looking for meaningful ways to make a difference this season, there are plenty of ways to spread kindness throughout our local community. Supporting organizations like the Atlanta Community Food Bank, Hosea Helps, or Meals On Wheels Atlanta is a wonderful place to start. Whether you donate canned goods, contribute financially, or volunteer your time, you’ll be helping ensure local families enjoy a warm, nourishing holiday meal. For those who prefer a more personal connection, sponsoring a family through programs like Our House or Agape Atlanta allows you to directly impact someone’s holiday by providing meal essentials, household items, or a little extra joy to brighten their Thanksgiving experience.

As temperatures cool, simple acts of warmth can go a long way. Shelters and community organizations across the city, including Atlanta Mission and Nicholas House, welcome donations of blankets, coats, socks, and everyday essentials to support families and individuals facing housing insecurity. Something as small as a warm jacket or a cozy blanket can make someone feel cared for and remind them they’re not alone. And giving back doesn’t always mean donating to a nonprofit — it can also be supporting the small businesses that are the heartbeat of our city. Whether it’s picking up baked goods from a local bakery, choosing gifts from neighborhood shops, or dining at locally owned restaurants, your holiday spending helps sustain the entrepreneurs and makers who contribute so much to Atlanta’s character and charm.

This season also provides a chance to model kindness for the next generation. Inviting children to help create a donation box, bake treats for a neighbor, or write appreciation notes to teachers, community workers, or first responders makes giving back a shared family experience — and often becomes a tradition that lasts.

Thanksgiving is about more than the meal; it’s about nurturing connection and remembering that the feeling of “home” extends far beyond the walls we live in. It’s found in the way we show up for one another, especially when it’s needed most. Atlanta is full of opportunities to share generosity in big and small ways, and even the smallest gesture can have a meaningful ripple effect for someone else’s holiday.

If you’d like recommendations for local volunteer opportunities or upcoming community events where you and your family can get involved, I’m always happy to share what’s happening around town. Wishing you and your loved ones a warm, grateful, and connection-filled Thanksgiving season.
